Spencer Named To Lou Henson Award Midseason Watch List

BOSTON – Cam Spencer was named to the Lou Henson Award Midseason Watch List on Wednesday, representing his status as one of the top mid-major players in the country through the first half of the year for Loyola University Maryland.

The junior guard enters Thursday night's game against Lafayette College leading the Patriot League in points (18.9) and steals (2.1) per game and assist-to-turnover ratio (3.5:1). He has helped the Greyhounds to a 9-6 overall record and 3-1 start in the Patriot League, tying for their best record through four games in eight years in the conference.

The award, which is presented annually to the top mid-major player in division I college basketball, honors the former Illinois and New Mexico State head coach who won 775 games in 41 seasons.

Spencer is one of 40 to be named to the Midseason Watch List. The award list is comprised of players from 21 NCAA Division I conferences.

His assist-to-turnover ratio ranks No. 5 in NCAA Division I, while he ranks 32nd in steals per game and 44 in points per game. He is also 16th in free-throw percentage (.907), 19th in total steals (32), 28th in total field goals made (104) and 38th in total points (284). He is also third on the team with 4.8 rebounds per game.

Spencer has started all 15 games, scoring in double-figures each time out for the Greyhounds. He has six games of 20 or more points, four with 26 or more.

In Monday night's win over Bucknell University, Spencer made two free throws with 4.8 seconds left to seal the 71-67 victory, scoring a game-high 26 points against the Bison.

He missed the first 12 games of the COVID-shortened 2020-2021 season, playing in the last two contests of the regular-season and then Loyola's three Patriot League Tournament games as the Greyhounds went to the conference title game.

Over the course of his career – 43 games – Loyola is 26-17 as Spencer has averaged 13.2 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.1 steals per game, and he has a 3.3:1 career assist-to-turnover ratio.
